This morning I saw another mouse. In the house. I seem to be the only one who cares, because the cats are clearly ignoring this particular problem. I think they’ve converted to Buddhism. Either that, or they’re now peace-loving, tree-hugging, vegetarians.
More recs: Hot Target by Suzanne Brockmann is the most recent addition to her ‘Troubleshooters, Inc’ series, which follows the adventures of former and current Navy SEALS. The thing I like about Brockmann, besides her great storytelling, is that she doesn’t portray these guys as uneducated thugs who get a rush from killing ‘the enemy.’ It’s clear that Brockmann has tremendous respect for the US military, and she works very hard to show the reality—or as real as it can be in fiction—of what it means to be a highly trained professional in today’s armed forces. I also respect her for being one of the first romance writers to feature an openly gay character who is not portrayed as a mere stereotype. In fact, her latest novel is all about gay rights and the homosexual men and women who served the US with honor during WWII.
My other rec is a movie: Shaun of the Dead. I really liked this. It’s not my favorite zombie movie ever (28 Days Later, though it’s not strictly about zombies, takes that prize), but it is a lot of fun, mostly because I can see myself reacting exactly like Shaun or his best friend to the suddenly onslaught of the undead. Scary.
