So, this is the first season I’ve ever tuned in to Beauty and the Geek, and yeah, it’s a train wreck. Good God. But I’m still watching.
However, because this is a show where one girl made brutal fun of another for playing chess, I was a bit curious to see what kinds of “qualifications” a person must have in order to land a spot in the house. I mean, really—watch one episode and you’ll want to know, too.
And yo, the difference in applications between the men and women was fascinating. The questions for the men? Focused on GPAs, advanced degrees, interesting personality quirks…while the girls got questions like: “Flirting is…?”
Literally, that’s the entire question. Fill in the blank.
I am being a little hard on them. I guess it’s obvious what the producers are looking for in the girls (and the guys). Here’s the fun part, though. Some of those questions (mostly from the “male” application) are actually pretty useful if you’re a writer trying to figure out your hero or heroine. Such as:
HOW DO YOU HANDLE IGNORANT PEOPLE?
WHO IS YOUR IDEAL PARTNER? IS THERE ANYONE THAT YOU WOULD CONSIDER IS “OUT OF YOUR LEAGUE” and VICE VERSA?
WHAT WAS THE LAST UNUSUAL, EXCITING OR SPONTANEOUS THING YOU INSTIGATED?
WHAT ARE YOUR INSECURITIES?
WHEN IT COMES TO WOMEN, WHAT DO YOU NEED THE MOST HELP WITH? GIVE US A BRIEF SYNOPSIS OF YOUR “QUIRKS” (I.E., WHAT MAKES YOU YOU?):
AMONGST YOUR FRIENDS WHO KNOW YOU BEST, WHAT IS A PHRASE YOU SAY OR A TRAIT OF YOURS THAT YOU ARE NOTORIOUS FOR?
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE TOPIC YOU CAN TALK FOR HOURS ON?
There are more, but I think the answers reveal a lot about a person, man or woman, and it’s something to throw into the Big Bag of Author Tools.
Here, too, for your viewing pleasure, is the gag reel for Battlestar Galactica, season three.
