“Girls from work licking their armpits…”

Nov 29 By Marjorie

That’s the title of the spam that just showed up in my mailbox.  I had to share.

I’m tired.  I’ve haven’t been going to bed earlier than 3:30 a.m. for the past week.  Which means that after I ogle Ty on Extreme Housemakeover, I’m crawling into bed.  Speaking of ogling, though, I’m curious about something—I just bought ‘The Chronicles of Riddick’ on DVD, and I’ve been thinking of male heroes in the movies or tv, the ones who are just so cool you wish you could wrap them up and take them home with you.  My bare bones list of favorites (because otherwise, it would take forever), in no particular order, are:

1. Indiana Jones

2. Han Solo

3. Riddick

4. Magnum

5. Goliath (I don’t care if he’s a cartoon or a Gargoyle)

6. Wolverine

7. MacGyver

8. Martin Riggs

9. Lex Luthor (Smallville)

10. Any character Johnny Depp has protrayed

11. John Crichton

12. Phantom of the Opera

13. Samurai Jack

14. Major John Sheppard (Stargate Atlantis)

Okay, so it was a longer list than I thought—but all these characters are smart, dangerous, and ruled by a strict code of honor (personal, or otherwise). All of them (with perhaps the exception of the Phantom) have a good sense of humor.  Feel free to add your own men to this list or provide a completely different one—I’m always curious to hear who and what people find attractive.

But my real question is this: who are the female counterparts of these guys?  And does there have to be a female counterpart, or is it enough that there is just a character, regardless of gender, that embodies these particular characteristics?  And if there were female characters like the above, would they get the same kind of attention / adoration / droolification that the men get?  I mean, would guys go gaga over a female Phantom of the Opera in the same way that women go nuts over the man?  And why am I even asking these questions?

Argh.  I guess I’m just getting the book out of my system.  I’ve been thinking a lot about heroes and heroines.  Still, I’m really curious to hear what you guys think.
