Maxine and Oturu by Carl Beu—Online Exclusive

image

More than a year ago I asked a brilliant young artist, Carl Beu, to do some work for me based on the Hunter Kiss universe.  Unfortunately, my computer DIED before I could post all the images, and I thought I’d lost them.  Just the other day, though, while searching my hard drive for a story, I found a little folder tucked away in the corner…and inside were all the images.  I’d saved them, backed them up…and hadn’t remembered at all.  Here’s the first of them…of Maxine and the demon Oturu.

About the artist:

Carl Beu is an up-and-coming artist based in the United States. He is inspired by an eclectic mix of contemporary and classical artists, as well as his travels abroad during his childhood. As a new contender to the world of illustration, he strives to create visions that are both unique and visually compelling. His website can be found at: http://www.demonhand.com/

To celebrate the upcoming release of Darkness Calls, the second book in her Hunter Kiss series, Marjorie has written a special letter from the hero, Grant, to his unborn daughter about how much he loves her—and her mother.  It’s a letter fans won’t be able to find in any of the books; instead it will be released in four parts, over the next four weeks, in both audio and written format.

THE FIRE KING is the ninth book in the Dirk & Steele series, about a dangerous shape-shifter who wakes from sleep after three thousand years, and whose survival rests on an agent of Dirk & Steele—the only person in the world who can understand his language.

Here’s a brief excerpt:

The humans allowed Karr to wake up, which was their first mistake.

He opened his eyes inside a small tight space where the walls were made of a heavy billowing cloth that flapped against a sharp wind. A tent.  Except, the tent was rocking and bouncing like a wagon in motion, and the human men he glimpsed were seated around him on short benches. Eastern-bred, he thought. Dark hair, golden skin.  Holding oddly shaped black sticks in their laps.

Weapons, whispered his instincts, reading danger in all the little details that had nothing do with the objects the men held. It was their cold bored gazes, the uniformity of their youth and odd clothing. Karr knew soldiers when he saw them.

It took only seconds for him to make his evaluation, and less than that to realize he was strapped to a hard wooden plank too small for his body.  The backs of his shoulders rubbed against a cold floor that felt like stone or metal, and thin leather restraints bound his chest, arms, and legs.  He was nearly naked, and smelled like urine and dry bones. None of which was as disturbing to Karr as the fact that he was still alive.  He had been quite clear about the matter.  His friends had promised to murder him.

And so they had.  He remembered…

I’ll be posting more excerpts over the next several months.  THE FIRE KING will be released in August!

From the Artist:

Here, I wanted to illustrate a more battle-ready Maxine, as the sun was setting and her tattoos were beginning to unravel. I enjoyed trying to visualize the intricate designs evaporating and reforming into razor-sharp beasts.

From the Artist:

This third illustration was an exciting opportunity to explore the look of ‘the boys’. I gathered lots of inspiration from deep sea aquatic life, and wanted them to seem formidable and dangerous, but also alien and mysterious.
