Theme: Stories that explore the true spirit of holiday
celebrations. Three prizes of $1,000 each. All entries must
be postmarked between January 1 and February 28, 2006.
Stories may be any length up to 800 words. Stories for
beginning readers should not exceed 500 words. Indicate word
count in the upper right-hand corner of the first page of your
manuscript. No crime, violence, or derogatory humor.
Manuscripts or envelopes should be clearly marked FICTION
CONTEST. Those not marked in this way will be considered as
regular submissions to Highlights. Enclose a stamped, self-
addressed envelope with each entry. No entry form or fee is
required. Entrants must be at least 16 years old. Send via
snail mail. The three winning entries will be announced in
June 2006. These stories will become the property of
Highlights for Children and will be published by Highlights.
All other submissions will be considered for purchase by
Highlights.

AVARI PRESS YOUNG ADULT FANTASY FICTION CONTEST

$5 ENTRY FEE
A cash prize, an advance, and a book contract will be awarded
to the author with the best original, unpublished submission
of a Young Adult Fantasy novel. Both new and established
authors are encouraged to enter the contest. Deadline March
31, 2006. In addition to the winner, two finalists will be
considered for a book contract. While we do not have a firm
rule about novel length, we are generally seeking novels that
are between 60,000 and 120,000 words in length. The winner
will receive:
$200 cash prize
Book contract from Avari Press
A competitive advance
Royalties
In the extremely unlikely event that a winner cannot be named,
all entry fees will be refunded.

The postmark deadline for entries to the 2006 The American
Poetry Journal book prize is February 28, 2006. The winner
will receive $500 and 25 copies. All entries will be
considered for publication. Both free and formal verse
styles are welcome. Multiple submissions are acceptable.
Simultaneous submissions are acceptable, but if your
manuscript is accepted for publication elsewhere you must
notify The American Poetry Journal and/or Dream Horse Press
immediately.
