It is Memorial Day, a day for memory, of those lost, of those being lost, and those who will be lost. It is a day to honor sacrifice. Both my grandfathers fought in WWII, one for America and the other for China, on the same side but for different countries, and their goals were the same: protect, preservere, and above all else, win. Because winning meant survival.
Ernie Pyle, celebrated journalist of WWII, who lost his life to a Japanese machine-gunner while covering the war, should be required reading for all who want a better understanding of what our men and women endure in the name of defending this country. If you would like to investigate some of his writings, please go to Indiana Universitys website. If nothing else, think some good thoughts for our people overseas. They deserve it.
And, because I have received notes from soldiers in Iraq (hey, Launie!), I say to you guys, stay safe.
