I think of him as one of the first writers I read as a young science fiction reader who suggested to me that there were ways into a much broader field of thoroughly imaginitive literature.
I felt the same way the first time I read Borges, as well as Allende. I never knew stories could be told like that, and it expanded the way I thought about language and writing. But that happens every now and then – I come across books and authors so cunning with their words that everything else just falls by the wayside.
