In the Dusk Court, everyone has an agenda, each more dangerous than the next. While the Ancients analyze and experiment upon a comatose Maika in the hopes of controlling the Monstrum Zinn, Tuya is fighting an inner battle against the ascension of the original Baroness inside her. Arcanics are disappearing from the city each day, and those with too much human blood live precarious lives—including Corvin, Bettani, and Kippa. Elsewhere, the Lord-Doctor’s cloaked daughter, the Beast, has delivered a mysterious syringe to the Warlord, her motives characteristically unclear.

But there is reason for hope, as Kippa believes that she can reach Maika’s soul through their unique connection and wake her from her poisoned slumber. To achieve this goal, she is joined by an unlikely array of allies—the mask-hungry murderer Yvette Lo Lim, the lilium-enhanced soldier Zortia, the Cumaean spy Atena and her Arcanic brother Resak, and, most notably, the nekomancer Ren Mormorian, returned at long last.
