Monstress #41

PUBLISHED: JUNE, 2022
WRITER: MARJORIE LIU
ARTIST: SANA TAKEDA

When Maika Halfwolf was betrayed by her dearest friend, Tuya, and injected with a pareful serum, she found herself trapped in her own mind. While her body was transferred to Dusk Court custody, her soul went on a journey through long-buried memories, and she finally unlocked the terrible truth she’d spent years seeking: as a child, it was Maika herself who had killed her mother, Moriko, after interrupting an experiment on the mask of the Shaman-Empress and accidentally releasing the ravenous Monstrum inside her.

Maika’s soul remains trapped in the horror of that revelation, but outside, intrigue and subterfuge abound. Corvin is quietly investigating the Dusk Court’s crackdown on human-looking Arcanics, while Tuya is fighting to prevent the complete takeover of her body by the ancient Baroness, and Kippa is searching for a way to reawaken Maika with the help of the newly returned Master Ren. Elsewhere, the Warlord secretly injected the comatose Maika with a serum provided by the mysterious Beast of the Blood Court—and in the aftermath, the Snake Queen’s attempt to control Maika’s power failed catastrophically, letting loose a monstrous body running on pure defensive instinct.
